Board reviews maintenance committee plan: faucets, PA upgrades, greenhouse security and LED lights

The Solon Springs School District’s maintenance committee presented a set of prioritized repairs and upgrades the board should consider implementing this summer and in the near term.
Committee members recommended replacing the elementary restroom’s continuously running faucets with individual or no‑touch fixtures (an initial estimate mentioned was about $3,500 for the replacement). The group also proposed upgrades to the kitchen and cafeteria public‑address system to ensure announcements are heard in large spaces, and reported a dishwasher grant application for the kitchen was submitted.
The board discussed security and usability items: reinforcing the greenhouse exterior door with concrete blocks and a secure frame so the growing space can be used more reliably for instruction and fundraisers; inventorying appliances and scoping equipment needs for a food‑prep classroom; and repairing or replacing cafeteria restroom stalls and fixtures to address perception and maintenance concerns. Members also discussed investigating ownership and management of a vending machine outside the cafeteria.
Finally, members talked about LED lighting and potential camera coverage near the softball field to support a proposed outdoor classroom and storage area; lighting would also improve security and allow some evening community events. Several items will require cost estimates, inventories or grant funding before proceeding.
The board moved into closed session on personnel after the facilities discussion.
