Solon Springs board adopts middle-school music requirement, approves contracts and moves to closed session

The Solon Springs School District Board of Education voted on May 19 to require middle-school students to take music (band and/or choir). A motion to adopt the requirement was moved, seconded and approved; the presiding officer announced one opposed vote and the motion carried.
Board members also approved the Season 12 services contract (the board record notes the contract is about $5,000 higher than last year), and approved additional collaborative teacher-release days (six half days) intended to support monthly teacher collaboration, with attention to supervision and transportation logistics.
The board took a second reading and approved technical policy corrections by voice vote. Near the end of the open session, the board voted to convene into closed session pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes section 19.85(1)(c) to consider employment, promotion, compensation or performance-evaluation data of district employees.
Several facilities items (security-camera options, softball-field electrical repairs, tennis-court maintenance) were discussed and tabled or left for further information; coaches continue to finalize summer contracts. The board requested additional cost information on some items to return to future agendas.
What happens next: The board will implement the middle-school music requirement and will address tabling items and personnel matters in closed session as appropriate.
