Ryan Ovenel was sworn in as superintendent of Stanwood-Camano School District No. 401 at the board's June 17 meeting. In his superintendent's report Ovenel thanked parent-teacher organizations and noted two recent donations to support student field trips: $310.40 from the Stanwood Elementary PTO for a Puget Bay Estuary Center trip and about $549.10 from the Twin City Elementary PTO for transportation to the wastewater treatment facility and Arrowhead Ranch.
The district's June enrollment report, presented during the meeting, showed a month-to-month decline of 22 full-time-equivalent students compared with May. The six-year average annual enrollment is 4,650 FTE, which the superintendent said is 46 FTE above the district's budget projection and 28 FTE above last year's average. District staff said they will work with a demographer this fall to produce updated low/medium/high enrollment projections and breakouts by grade band.
Ovenel and board members also publicly acknowledged several administrators who are moving roles or leaving the district. The board thanked Robert Haskell for his service as executive director of special services, congratulated Principal Kimberly Caldwell on an upcoming move to lead Elder Bay Elementary, and noted that Christy Auckland will move from an assistant-principal role at Port Susan to a leadership role at Church Creek campus. The board also recognized another administrator named in the transcript as Dr. Beng for a new superintendent role in Walla Walla.
The superintendent closed the report by noting summer staffing for programs and thanking staff for their work; the board recessed to consent agenda items afterward.
