The Chapel Hill‑Carrboro City Schools board voted unanimously to remove a sentence in policy 2200 that would have prevented the board chair from serving more than two consecutive terms.
Board members debated the sentence at length during a policy review. Some trustees said they favor rotation of leadership to develop broader experience among members; others said term limits are a local choice and not necessary if the board can vote for different leadership. A motion to strike the two‑term reference and add framing language about the board's values and encourage rotation (with further polishing by the policy committee) was moved and seconded and carried without opposition.
The chair said the change is not intended to signal any personal motive but to preserve flexibility; trustees agreed the handbook could include guidance on leadership rotation and that the policy language should reflect board values without creating an inflexible requirement. The amendment will be returned for final adoption on second reading as part of the policy review cycle.
