Board reviews first readings to clarify PTA liability and update student health procedures
Summary
District staff presented first‑reading revisions: policy 2305 clarifies the district is not legally or financially responsible for PTA/PTO actions; policy 8312 updates student health/head‑check procedures to reflect CDC/AAP guidance removing classwide head checks and the 7‑day retreatment requirement.

District staff presented two policy revisions at a work session: a clarification to policy 2305 concerning parent‑teacher organizations, and an update to the health procedures policy 8312.
On policy 2305 (PTA/PTO and other parent organizations), staff said the revision 'clarifies our separation as the district from these parent organizations legally, financially and otherwise' and added language that 'the district bears no responsibility or liability for any parent organization.' Staff described the change as codifying longstanding practice into clearer policy language; this was presented as a first reading.
On policy 8312 (health procedures), staff outlined changes to align with current health guidance. They cited the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics and said these organizations recommend stopping routine classwide head checks; instead, suspected cases should be checked individually and discreetly with parental consent. Staff also said the former 7‑day retreatment and recheck requirement is no longer recommended and will be removed from policy and addressed in procedure language. The presentation noted that school principals or office staff typically perform individual checks and that training is on‑the‑job rather than provided by a health department.
Trustees asked clarifying questions about parent permission for checks and whether procedural training would be retained; staff confirmed parental consent language will be included in the medical consent forms and procedural detail will move to administrative procedures. Both items were presented for discussion and will return for possible adoption at a future board meeting.
