The Public Works Advisory Committee received a wide-ranging water and sewer project update on March 19 from Sean Singer, the city's engineering manager for water and sewer.
Singer said three major water-side projects are in construction, including a new alluvial well (Well 6) on plant property and filter rehabilitation work that recently completed sampling and is being returned to service. He described a parallel controls and valve replacement project intended to protect the filter investment and avoid future catastrophic backwash failures.
Singer said the city will open bids on a reverse-osmosis (RO) skid replacement and chemical-feed upgrades to address equipment reaching the end of its useful life. He also described early design work on front-end oxidation improvements to remove iron and manganese so filters run longer between backwashes, and a chloramine conversion for in-town wells to align disinfectant residuals across interconnections.
On the wastewater side, Singer described work on a new dual-screen headworks to reduce hair- and rag-related maintenance problems, sludge handling upgrades (including consideration of centrifuges or presses to improve dewatering), grid system conversions to increase removal efficiency, clarifier rehabilitations planned in phases, lift-station upgrades, odor-control work shifting from carbon scrubbers to bio-scrubbers, and various safety and access improvements.
Singer said most recent bids have come in near budget and that long lead-time supply issues have moderated since pandemic-era peaks. Several projects are at 30% design or early procurement; the committee asked technical and funding questions and staff agreed to follow up with additional documentation as projects progress.
No binding votes were taken during the update; the briefing was informational and focused on project sequencing, procurement and lifecycle replacement needs.
