Commission awaits MoDOT sign-off to expand traffic-box art to state-owned locations

Preservation staff told the commission the city is waiting for a signed agreement with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) that would permit the commission to install artwork or sponsor wraps on MoDOT-owned traffic boxes along state roads in O'Fallon. Tanya said the agreement has been routed to MoDOT and the city administrator followed up; staff described the agreement as the final administrative step before installations can proceed on state-owned boxes.
Until now the commission has installed wraps on the 38 traffic boxes the city owns, but Tanya said Highway K and Highway N locations are MoDOT-owned and require the separate agreement. Two sponsor applications the commission has already approved are on hold pending MoDOT's signature; staff said those boxes are highly visible at major intersections, specifically naming an intersection at Veterans and K and another at South Outer 364 and K.
Tanya said the expectation is that once MoDOT signs, staff will coordinate installation with sponsors and notify businesses along Highway K that the boxes adjacent to their properties could be wrapped. "Once that agreement gets signed, that's an agreement that allows us to be basically the authority on doing traffic box sponsorships on MoDOT-owned traffic boxes here in the city," Tanya said.
The commission expressed support for outreach to businesses along Highway K and for executing the two pending wraps once the agreement is final.
