Hayak student leads council in renaming Lake View School Park to Luggers Park

Holland City Council voted unanimously on Oct. 1 to rename Lake View School Park to Luggers Park after a presentation led by Hayak student Maggie Talgenoff.
Parks staff described improvements planned for the site — improved soccer fields, a dog run, expanded parking and additional tree plantings — and asked the parks commission and council to adopt a new name to avoid confusion with another city property called Lake View Park. Talgenoff told council she proposed the name “Luggers Park” because the park borders Luggers Road and because the Luggers family settled in the area in the 19th century and has a record of local philanthropic activity.
“I'm a descendant of the Luggers family and I think this renaming would be a great opportunity to showcase my family's history within the city of Holland,” Talgenoff said. Council members praised the youth-led nomination and emphasized the value of young people participating in local government; the motion to rename the park passed by unanimous roll call.
What’s next: Parks staff will update signage and materials to reflect the new name and will coordinate a public announcement and ribbon-cutting timeline as the site improvements move forward.
