Facilities staff member Tim told the board the district is experiencing intermittent digital-control failures at Oakill Middle School and New River Primary that affect larger spaces (cafeteria, LMC/media center and kitchen). He said the original installer is no longer in business and the manufacturer’s support is limited.
“We know what the solution is, but it’s a very expensive solution,” Tim said. “It’s about a $700,000 fix.” He described options including doing the work all at once, phasing the work across schools, or contracting for monthly services over several years to spread cost.
Tim said staff can temporarily ‘‘force’’ controls into position to keep spaces usable, but that the failures are unpredictable and can swing temperatures rapidly. He added that the district put one unit out to bid with bids due the next morning and that replacement lead time is 12–14 weeks.
Board members and staff discussed interim measures to keep spaces comfortable, the logistics of multiple buildings on the Oakill campus, and procurement steps to seek competitive bids.
No vote was taken at the meeting; staff said they would return with options and bid results.
