Sue Ellen, a parent of a Washington student, told the board she strongly supports the recently approved bell-to-bell ban on personal communication devices in Wauwatosa schools, citing academic, mental-health and social-development research. "The research is clear. Unrestricted mobile phone use in school harm students' academic performance, mental health, and social development," she said.
She told the board the policy should be implemented carefully, noting it will place new demands on support staff and those who enforce the rule and that accommodations are needed for students with IEPs and 504 plans. Sue Ellen said she participated in the district committee that planned implementation and thanked Luke Pinion for leading a community book study that helped build support.
The board did not take any immediate action during public comment. Sue Ellen's remarks reflect community-level support for a policy the board already approved; district staff and the implementation committee will carry out next steps before the 2025–26 school year.
