The board reviewed a recommended five‑year facility use agreement between USD 253 and Emporia State University and voted 6‑0 to approve the arrangement.
Staff explained the district last entered a partnership with Emporia State in 2016; the new agreement would run five years with an annual payment of about $37,500. Discussion noted the district examined alternatives, including hosting events at Emporia High School through a capital project (bleachers, locker rooms), but staff said those options would require longer planning and additional capital funding.
Board members said the agreement buys time to explore a local option and that the community will have views on whether games should be played at ESU or Emporia High School. Staff said the agreement covers use of ESU facilities, cleanup and concessions arrangements and that Emporia State will continue to manage concessions operations while the district retains scheduling access specified in the contract.
The motion to approve the five‑year agreement passed unanimously; the board directed staff to continue evaluating longer‑term facility options during the term of the agreement.
