Long County considers separating city and county planning-and-zoning functions and to update decade-old personnel policy

County Manager Shane Richardson told the Board that public hearings on the county’s future land use map drew strong participation and that the map has been submitted for regional review and will go to the state for finalization in roughly 30 days.
Richardson said growth and differing development goals have prompted discussion about separating city and county planning-and-zoning functions; he reported the mayor is open to the city establishing its own planning-and-zoning and that Board members generally supported further coordination to consider the change. Richardson said staff would review bylaws and procedures to support any transition and that planning-and-zoning workshops may be scheduled to streamline operations.
Richardson also told the Board that the County Personnel Policy has not been updated in about 10 years and recommended revisions to address modern workplace issues such as social media. The Board agreed to schedule workshops to review and update the policy with the aim of aligning with surrounding counties. He clarified that the comprehensive plan will remain a joint plan between the city and county even if formal planning-and-zoning functions separate.
A planning-and-zoning workshop is scheduled for April 20, with regular meetings expected to resume May 18.
