Board tables vote on new parent‑communication app, asks staff for more details

The Des Moines Independent Comm School District board on June 18 tabled a proposed switch from the district’s current parent‑communication app (SnapConnect) to ParentSquare after members requested more information about language support, integration with activities/athletics and potential cost savings.
Board members said parents and schools already manage numerous apps and asked staff to demonstrate how ParentSquare would reduce friction for families, support two‑way communication in multiple home languages, and integrate activities scheduling. Superintendent Dr Roberts said the pivot was intended to reduce the number of apps families use and to provide broader language support, but said he did not have detailed cost comparisons available at the meeting and offered to bring staff with deeper knowledge to the next session.
Board member Campos offered a friendly amendment to table the item until staff provided a fuller comparison and implementation plan. The motion to table (moved by Campos, seconded by Miss Alonzo) passed by voice vote; Dr Roberts indicated the item will return on the July 9 agenda with additional information.
The board’s vote to table preserves the existing arrangement while staff prepares a fuller analysis of integration, language capabilities, onboarding status at schools, and any recurring costs.
