Hillsborough County commissioners approve design agreement for MOSI site, Steinbrenner Field renovations and event sponsorships

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners approved several agreements and sponsorships at its Oct. 15 meeting, including a design interlocal for an indoor sports facility at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) redevelopment site and a purchase agreement to fund renovations at George M. Steinbrenner Field.
Katie with Hillsborough County Communications and Digital Media said staff reported that repurposing the county-owned MOSI site "would save $15,000,000," and that the total estimated cost for the indoor sports facility is $70,700,000. The board approved an interlocal agreement with the Tampa Sports Authority for design services; county staff set a target to open the facility by 2028 and said they will provide updates as key milestones are reached.
Commissioners also approved a renovation purchase agreement with the New York Yankees Partnership for up to $17,955,000 in improvements at George M. Steinbrenner Field, funded from the county's tourist development tax. Requested upgrades listed by staff include additional security, digital enhancements, parking-lot repaving, seating and field improvements, and lighting.
The board directed the county administrator to establish an internal working group to conduct a comprehensive review of existing board policies and to present recommendations for potential board action. In addition, commissioners approved county sponsorships of $93,750 for the 2026 Tampa Bay Black Heritage Festival and $60,000 for the 2026 United Bikers Jamboree to be held at Brandon Harley-Davidson of Tampa Bay. Katie stated that funding for these sponsorships is available in the FY26 adopted budget under countywide nonprofit allocations.
