Design consultant proposes two rear doors at 370 East Market; board approves
Summary
The York City Historical Architectural Review Board approved a proposal to install two fiberglass half-glass exterior doors with transoms on the rear of 370 East Market Street after finding the changes would be minimally visible from the public right-of-way.

Philip Bender, the design consultant for the project, told the York City Historical Architectural Review Board that the proposal for 370 East Market Street calls for two exterior entry doors on the back of the house and transoms above them. “We27re looking to do 2 exterior entry doors on the back of the house,” he said, noting the doors would be fiberglass units in a canvas color from Renewal by Andersen.
Board consultant Committee member (committee member) noted the existing doors may not be original, that they likely opened onto a porch that no longer exists, and that a garage currently blocks much public view of the rear elevation. The consultant recommended replacement doors with divided lights rather than a single large glass opening; Bender said the installer could provide simulated divided lights using exterior grids rather than individual panes.
After discussing visibility and historic integrity, a committee member moved to approve the application “as presented because the doors are likely not original, because the porch is missing, because the garage is there and is a visual barrier to the rear of the house,” and another member seconded the motion. The board voted in favor; the transcript does not record vote counts.
The approval covers the two half-glass doors in canvas with transoms as presented. The board recorded no further conditions at the meeting. The applicant thanked the board and said he would follow up on any required installation details.
