North Logan library board: budget steady as new building targets September opening

The North Logan City Library Board heard an update on the library's budget and construction timeline at its May 14 meeting.
Trent Bateman, the library director, told the board the fiscal year is roughly 83% complete and that the library has spent about 78 to 79 percent of its operating budget so far. "We at this point of the year, we're 83% through the year," Bateman said, noting that utility costs are higher than usual because the library is temporarily operating two buildings and that professional-services costs rose with IT work for the new facility.
Bateman said library fine revenue has fallen to roughly 50 percent of prior levels following a policy change to reduce fines, and that donations from "Friends and the Thorn endowment" have been given to the city and will be placed into the library's budget (amounts not specified). "The donation friends and the Thorn endowment, the money has been given to the city that just needs to be put in the budget," he said.
On construction, Bateman presented photos and floor plans and described internal spaces including a community hall, conference room, makerspace, computer lab and a story pit. He said shelving and fixture installation by the vendor that serves elementary schools statewide is scheduled for mid-August, and the library is targeting a September opening: "We're telling people at some point in September... maybe September mid, but September, we should be open at some point," he said.
The board asked clarifying questions about timelines and staffing; Bateman said furniture delivery slipped from an earlier June estimate to July and that the July schedule should allow shelving to be completed by mid-August. The board did not take formal action on the budget at the meeting.
Next steps: Bateman will finalize the construction schedule with the vendor and return with an opening-date announcement when shipments and shelving installation are confirmed.
