Harrison County Council elects Kyle Nix chair, hires temporary council attorney

County Auditor Sara Burdick called the Harrison County Council to order on Jan. 12 and led the pledge of allegiance before the body moved to officer elections.
Councilman Jake Blackman nominated Councilman Kyle Nix for chairman; Councilman Richard Gerdon seconded the motion. The council recorded a 5–0 vote in favor with Nix abstaining, and Nix was appointed chair. Gerdon then nominated Councilman Jake Blackman as vice‑chair; Joe Kellum seconded, and the motion passed 5–0 with Blackman abstaining.
On the council’s request to employ legal counsel, Councilman Blackman moved to retain Tad Whitis under a three‑month contract effective Jan. 1 through March 31, 2026; Councilman Kellum seconded. The motion carried 6–0.
