Special-education report shows strong post-school outcomes; board hears new state diploma and SEL requirements

At the Oct. 21 Pleasant Hill SD 1 board meeting, staff presented the district’s special-education demographics and one-year post-school outcomes for the class of 2023, and discussed new state diploma and curriculum requirements the district must implement.
A presenter said the district serves approximately 140 students with special-education services across a range of needs, including three students in life-skills placements served by regional consortium programs. Staff explained the district consolidates some specialized, high-cost services regionally to ensure trained staff and safe placements.
On post-school outcomes, staff reported that about 50% of 2023 special-education graduates were attending some form of further education or training a year after graduation, 80% reported having had paid jobs at graduation, and 90% were currently employed at the one-year follow-up. The presenter credited persistent follow-up by the secondary case manager for achieving a high response rate to the survey.
In the superintendent/staff report, the board was briefed on state diploma changes that require a one-half credit in personal finance and a one-half credit in higher-education/career-skill pathways for applicable cohorts, plus a statewide mandate for comprehensive substance-use prevention/intervention plans and expanded social-emotional learning instruction across grades. Staff said district counselors and special-education teachers are coordinating to implement the new requirements and curricula.
Board members discussed implementation timing and whether the new credits would be scheduled as standalone classes or embedded in existing courses; staff said options are under consideration and implementation planning is underway.
