The Alameda County Reparations Commission on May 13 approved a campaign toolkit and outreach plan designed to increase public turnout and media attention for its June 30 presentation to the Board of Supervisors.
The toolkit was presented by Tassian Kumulele, founder and principal consultant of the Kumulele Group, who described a package that includes why June 30 matters, a letter-of-support template (the consultant emphasized the product is a letter of support rather than a municipal "petition"), links to a change.org page to broaden reach, and campaign graphics and draft social messaging intended for use by community partners and commissioners.
"We want this moment to count, and we want them to show up on 06:30 at the board meeting," Kumulele said, urging commissioners to repost and engage with content early to maximize social-media algorithms. Staff and commissioners discussed focusing on Facebook and Instagram for organic reach and on targeted pitching to local news outlets (KQED, East Bay Times, San Francisco Chronicle) for feature coverage.
Commissioners also discussed on-the-ground outreach tied to Juneteenth events and other community gatherings as a way to recruit attendees, and confirmed that modest print and collateral budget line items exist to support QR-coded handouts and signs.
The commission voted to approve the campaign package and asked staff and the consultant to coordinate registration (via the campaign web form), targeted media pitching, and volunteer mobilization in the weeks leading to June 30.
