Cincinnati City Council honors firefighters for icy-water rescue of 11-year-old

Cincinnati City Council on Feb. 11 unanimously adopted a resolution commending units from the Cincinnati Fire Department for rescuing an 11-year-old girl with autism from icy water at Bramble Park.
The resolution, introduced by Vice Mayor Jan Michelle Kearney, recounted how crews from Ladder 31, Engine 49 and Heavy Rescue 9 assessed hazardous terrain, lowered an extension ladder down a steep slope and deployed personnel in ice-rescue suits to secure the child and bring her to safety.
"This is a testament" to the department's training and professionalism, Fire Chief Frank McKinley told the council, thanking elected officials for recognizing members who he said "risk their lives to save the lives of others." McKinley identified himself as chief of the Cincinnati Fire Department.
Council members praised the crew's coordination and readiness. Council member Owens said the department's prevention and training work distinguishes it, and council member Albee noted firefighters respond to a wide range of emergencies beyond fires. After remarks, the chamber gave the crews a standing ovation.
The council took a roll-call vote and approved the resolution with unanimous support.
