Brooke County Commission approves hiring, proclamations and local fire equipment payments

The Brooke County Commission met May 5, 2026 at the county courthouse and, with President Thomas R. Diserio absent, approved multiple routine administrative actions including a personnel hire, departmental promotions, proclamations and targeted equipment payments for local fire departments. Commissioner Christina J. White moved the principal motions and Commissioner Stacey Wise seconded; actions passed unanimously among those present.
The commission approved hiring Anna Long as a part-time emergency medical technician at the request of Greg Moore, Director of EMS/EMA, with a start date of May 15, 2026 pending drug screening and a background check. The commission also acknowledged personnel changes in the Brooke County Sheriff’s Office: Corporal Kenneth A. Shuman was promoted to sergeant and Sergeant Devin Baker was promoted to lieutenant.
Officials adopted proclamations designating May as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Disease Awareness Month and May as Foster Care Awareness Month. The board also approved All-County Fire Protection funding directed to pay vendors for equipment: Follansbee Volunteer Fire Department — $7,952.83; Colliers Volunteer Fire Department — $3,773.30 and $4,178.73; and Weirton Fire Department — $760.00 for rope-rescue equipment.
The commission approved the Brooke-Hancock Joint Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) Memorandum of Understanding and instructed Mr. Bolen to present the MOU to Hancock County. Commissioners also approved the certification of delinquent taxes after a presentation by Laurie Eastham, Chief Tax Deputy for the Brooke County Sheriff’s Office; a Courthouse Security Grant application was approved for submission with a filing deadline of May 8, 2026.
In-house budget transfers were authorized for several departments: Tax Office — $3,600; EMA/OES — $190; Animal Shelter — $6,666; and Rails to Trails — $100. The commission approved invoices and vouchers and ordered checks across funds, including payroll withholding and payments from the General County Fund, E-911 Communications, Ambulance Service, County Fire Protection, Valuation, and the County Clerk’s Record Room, as listed in the meeting record.
The meeting concluded with a motion by Commissioner Christina J. White to adjourn, which passed unanimously. The commission also rescheduled its regular May meeting from Election Day, May 12, 2026, to Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 10:30 a.m.
