The Waunakee Plan Commission approved a site plan for traffic improvements at Waunakee Community High School, including gates that would close east-west movements on part of Community Drive during typical school hours and a new entrance-only driveway intended to improve pedestrian safety.
Staff described the plan and said a traffic-pedestrian study recommended the gates and adjustments to drop-off queuing. "We did do a traffic pedestrian safety study, and that engineer recommended the gates at these specific locations and the drop off for queuing, to improve pedestrian safety," a school-district representative identified as Roxanne said during the meeting.
Staff told the commission that first-responder vehicles would receive transponder stickers to access the gates and that gates include breakaway features for emergency access. Commissioners asked about parking impacts, including removal of a scooter/motorcycle parking spot; Roxanne and staff said scooter parking was eliminated and bike parking remains. Staff said the lot between the two school buildings will be used for staff parking and that transponders will be issued to staff assigned to that lot.
The commission approved the site plan on a motion and second, with approval recorded as subject to minor engineering clarifications.
