Planning staff informed the commission on May 12 that the City of Tulare's housing element was approved by the City Council and that staff is preparing the final documents for submission to the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).
Mario, speaking as planning staff, described the council approval as a major milestone after several years of work and told commissioners he would submit final housing element documents to HCD. He also said the city will begin work on a general plan update in the coming year and asked commissioners to expect that role in future workshops and hearings.
Mario formally introduced new planner Derek Okubo, who said he recently moved to the area from Hawaii and briefly greeted the commission. Commissioners welcomed Okubo and the staff noted a short upcoming agenda for the next meeting with several items already scheduled.
Commissioners then discussed a constituent question about a promised school site in a subdivision off Seminole; Mario said the site remains owned by the school district and that the district has not yet seen the enrollment projections on that side of town that would prompt immediate construction. The commission did not take action on the school-site discussion during this meeting.
