Board accepts Iroquois Paving bid for Ashgrove bridge; approves paving and engineering agreements

Iroquois County’s transportation and highway committee reviewed bids and recommended accepting Iroquois Paving’s low responsive bid of $636,991.94 for the Ashgrove (Ashbrook) bridge project and accepting Varsity Striping’s bid of approximately $30,045 for county striping.
County engineer staff warned the board that the Ashgrove paving bid came in about 24% above the engineer’s estimate and that rejecting the bid risked re‑letting the project at a potentially higher price or receiving no bids. After discussion the committee moved to accept both bids and their recommendations were reported to the full board.
The committee also presented and the board approved engineering agreements: Hutchinson Engineering to prepare a safety study and submit an HSIP application for County Highway 10 (Bales Lake) not to exceed $30,000, and Willard Hoffman & Associates for Stockland Bridge repair for $26,584. The board authorized the county engineer to purchase certain highway equipment up to $330,000 for FY2026, including a semi tractor, a dump trailer and a replacement ECM for a semi, as outlined by staff.
Members discussed the volatile state of construction and fuel costs and recognized the practical need to accept current bids in a tight market rather than risk higher future bids. The motions to accept bids and approve engineering agreements were carried by roll call.
