Commissioners also approved accommodation-tax appropriations for county events: $50,000 to Flint Premier Soccer LLC to support a local soccer program, a two-year $20,000 commitment to the Midwest Invitational Rodeo LLC, and $20,000 to the Salvation Army Life Center for the Gus Macker Flint tournament. The board approved an additional $40,000 for the Genesee County Agricultural Society and $8,000 for the Fire Sticks College Exposure Tournament, each funded from the county’s accommodation-tax fund balance.
Board members discussed the process used to screen and approve appointments. Commissioner discussion ranged from support for ad hoc interview panels to calls for full-board public interviews for some sensitive seats, such as the road commission. Chair recognized that the board’s appointments policy allows an ad hoc committee to review applications and optionally conduct interviews, and several commissioners urged clearer communication to applicants when agendas change.
The board also approved a consent agenda of routine items including several committee recommendations and heard reports from the finance committee that the county’s single audit had no findings.
What happens next: The board clerk will notify appointees and publish updated board rosters. Commissioners asked staff to send corrected letters to applicants who had been told the vote date in error, and to clarify next steps for any seats that require additional vetting or interviews.
