Aberdeen Town Board approves consent agenda, clarifies downtown vehicle-backing rule

Aberdeen Town Board members on Nov. 10 approved agenda items 1–4 on the consent agenda, including an amendment to the townordinance that would make current downtown vehicle-backing practices conforming rather than illegal.
Planning staff told the board the ordinance change is intended to align the code with existing on-street parking patterns in the central business district. "The ordinance does not currently align with the existing vehicle backing activity," staff said. "So this section is the amendment is to align it with the safety and existence of the current vehicle backing that's pretty much all throughout downtown." The staff presentation noted the change applies only within the central business district and would cover angled and perpendicular on-street parking.
Board members also discussed a related update to the town's unified development ordinance that would add two seats to the downtown advisory board; staff said the change is intended to clarify who can serve on that advisory body. After brief discussion, a motion and second were recorded to approve items 1 through 4 as the consent agenda, and the board adopted the package by voice vote.
The change does not alter parking patterns outside the central business district, and staff said any future on-site or temporary event uses on private property would still require applicable permits or police staffing as appropriate. The board will implement the ordinance amendment through the standard code-amendment process scheduled for the regular meeting.
