Board honors classified employees and recognizes Valley Elementary staff for extraordinary support to a grieving family

The board held its annual recognition of classified employees, honoring 16 staff members selected by their school teams for exemplary service during the past school year.
A field representative for a state senator, William Boyd, offered remarks on behalf of the senator and congratulated the recipients. The board called recipients individually to receive certificates and invited the audience to applaud the honorees.
Separately, the board and Valley Elementary principal shared a tribute to two Valley staff members, Melissa Roman and Michelle Na, who provided intensive support to a student and family facing a terminal illness. Principal Rexstad described home visits, academic and emotional supports, and campus efforts to maintain the child’s engagement: “Melissa often made home visits to check not only on J but the entire family ... Michelle came up with a plan to show the family support through meals, accommodations, home visits and massages,” he said.
Rexstad also cited schoolwide improvements, including decreased chronic absenteeism (an 8% reduction from the prior year and 9% from two years prior), measurable gains on state assessments for multiple subgroups, and implementation of PBIS strategies. The board and audience offered applause and public recognition; no formal action was required.
