Residents urge Burr Ridge board to address bright lights and overnight noise at leased trucking yard

Chestnut Hills residents told the Burr Ridge Board of Trustees on Feb. 24 that a leased trucking yard operated by Saia has installed high-mounted LED fixtures and is producing persistent overnight noise, and they asked the village to enforce terms of the annexation agreement and pursue permanent mitigation.
"I'm here basically to ask the help of the mayor and the board," said resident Steve L, who said new lights and late-night noise have worsened in recent months. Board president for Chestnut Hills Donna Ryan said she and other neighbors began receiving complaints in December and want more than temporary fixes: "What we're looking for is something more permanent ... a wall, a sound barrier," she said, noting the existing wooden fence does little to reduce sound.
John Summers described more than 15 LED fixtures installed above the barrier and said the annexation agreement (he cited paragraph 6, section D) called for lighting to be below the barrier. "We prepared something I'll read it quickly ... the backyard natural Wetlands behind Chestnut Hills were pitched black," Summers said, adding that recent fixtures "flood" backyards with light. Frank Burkwitz told the board that the noise goes beyond backup beepers: lift trucks, repeated trailer drops and long staging periods are disturbing residents.
Mayor Gro acknowledged the village's prior negotiations with the yard owner and said the village would review the annexation agreement and follow up: "I will look at it ... Evan will be in touch with Steve and others who are leading this," the mayor said. Staff member Evan told residents the village has been in contact with Saia's national office and that the company "has been very responsive"; he said lights had been pitched down and that the village expects additional corrections in the coming weeks. Evan added that staff will continue to work with residents on the noise issue.
The board did not take formal action at the Feb. 24 meeting beyond promising staff follow-up. Residents asked that the matter be added to a future agenda if necessary, and the board said staff would notify them as the village contacts Saia and reviews the agreement.
Next steps: village staff said they will review the annexation agreement and continue outreach to Saia and impacted residents; the board indicated the issue could return to a future agenda if more action is needed.
