Council members directed staff on May 12 to work with the Boulder City Sunrise Rotary and Boulder City Rotary Club on a proposal to fund and install a shade structure at no cost to the city over the Bicentennial Park grill.
Public Works/Utilities Director Gary Poindexter described the Rotary clubs’ concept and noted the Southern Nevada Health District requires a covered prep area for permitted special events. Council discussed the design’s appearance in the historic district, and members asked staff to pursue a design consistent with the gazebo and City Hall and to use Redevelopment Agency (RDA) or other city funds if needed to achieve historic compatibility.
The Rotary representative said the clubs would pursue a tan, cantilevered metal shade to match recently approved carport structures but that the Rotary’s funding capacity is limited and any design changes could affect cost. The Historic Preservation Commission will review the building permit and certificate of appropriateness; council approved staff direction to partner with the Rotary clubs and requested the clubs be invited to participate in design discussions.
Next steps: Staff will coordinate with Rotary, present a design to the Historic Preservation Commission, confirm funding responsibilities and return to council if major design changes or funding requests are proposed.
