Heather Harding of the county electoral board told supervisors the Mount Carmel and Auburn precinct moves would move polling out of fire department buildings into renovated community facilities and that the Black Walnut precinct at a child-care center has confusing access and limited parking. "What you are asking for us tonight is for us to to hold a public hearing on May 19th for these proposed changes," Harding said, asking the board to authorize the hearing and allow staff time to mail required notices to voters.
Board members also discussed potential costs for a handicap ramp and related repairs at Turbeville/Turnerville; supervisors agreed the ramp/repair funding would be considered separately from scheduling the hearing. The electoral board said it has carryover funds and expects partial state reimbursement for recent elections, but noted logistics and state notification deadlines require prompt action.
The board approved the ballot-place relocation hearing date by motion from Supervisor Oaks, seconded by Supervisor Thompson. The public hearing will provide formal notice and an opportunity for residents to comment before any formal relocation vote.
Harding and the electoral board said they would coordinate voter notifications and that some sites being considered are offered at no cost to the county. The board did not take a final vote to relocate any precincts during the May 4 meeting; it only set the May 19 hearing to consider the proposed changes.
