Parents announce device open house; IHSA referee urges addition of fourth boys volleyball team

During the public-comment period at the May 5 Barrington CUSD 220 board meeting, two members of the public raised items for board follow-up.
Jordan Lynville, identifying himself as a parent and member of a local technology-advisory group, publicized an open house on Friday, May 15 at the library to discuss concerns about in-class device use and screen time. Lynville told the board that some parents in surrounding communities have petitioned for reduced device use in early grades and cited recent testimony and research indicating correlations between frequent in-class device use and declines in certain academic measures.
"Digital platforms are gaming education. Kids focus on their score, not the content," Lynville said, urging parents of district 220 students to attend the open house and to submit feedback online if they cannot attend.
Board members thanked Lynville and indicated administration would follow up. The district's superintendent and staff later discussed parent-engagement strategies and plans to expand communications about classroom technology use.
Lee Bennett, an IHSA referee speaking in a personal capacity, asked the board to identify and remove barriers that prevent Barrington High School from fielding a fourth boys volleyball team. Bennett said neighboring conferences routinely schedule four levels of boys volleyball and argued the district has sufficient participation to add another level, requesting assistance so coaches can create the additional roster.
"Please remove whatever barriers are preventing our volleyball coaches from fielding a fourth team for the boys," Bennett said. The board asked administration to investigate and report back on potential obstacles.
Public-comment rules were reiterated at the start of the period: comments are noninteractive and do not necessarily reflect the board's views; any items requiring follow-up would be referred to district staff.
