Health director outlines facility renovation plans, program shifts and community outreach

Saline County Health Department Director Jason Tiller updated the county commission on public‑health activities and planning work from February through April, highlighting community events, proposals for a facility renovation and an upcoming program transition.
Tiller said the department hosted its second Fathers & Focus event and that the Salina Speaks mental‑health block party drew more than 200 attendees. He also reported the department received nine proposals from architectural firms for potential renovation of the Salina Family Facility and that a request for award (RFA) to select a firm is expected to come before the commission on May 19.
Tiller warned that several maternal and early‑childhood programs will shift from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to the newly created Office of Early Childhood beginning in July and said county staff currently have "very little to no information" on how that will affect reporting or grants. He said the county will monitor the transition and share updates when more detail is available.
Other items: the health department promoted monthly mental‑health first‑aid training, offered mosquito‑control dunks for residents to reduce breeding sites, and reported first‑four‑month spending at about 25% of budgeted expenses. Commissioners praised the department’s outreach and shared‑service work with neighboring counties.
The department will return with the RFA award recommendation on May 19 and will keep the commission informed as the Office of Early Childhood implements transfers from KDHE.
