Quincy district maps new state math priorities, outlines targeted intervention for students behind in fractions

District instructional leaders presented a data-driven plan to address long-standing math gaps at a Quincy School District board meeting.
Allison, the district’s math instructional lead, told the board that Washington’s recently released priority standards reduce the full set of learning objectives to a smaller list of higher-priority items district staff view as essential to later success. The district identified a subset of “priority prerequisites” that students must master to access next-grade content; fractions emerged as a gateway skill repeatedly linked to later struggles.
Winter benchmark snapshots from the district’s online diagnostics (DreamBox and i-Ready) showed many students had not yet mastered key prerequisities: for example, a large share of the cohort tested in winter had not mastered fraction-comparison items the district flags as essential. Allison said the team used that data to build learning progressions and local performance scales that distinguish the classroom-ready skills (level 2) from grade-level mastery (level 3).
To act on the findings, staff described a multi-part strategy: revise pacing guides to prioritize the state’s priority standards, create short classroom-aligned assessments tied to each priority standard, and run course-based interventions. The district will pilot dedicated intervention sections in sixth grade and ninth grade aimed specifically at the five-to-eight priority topics that research and local data indicate are the most consequential for algebra readiness; staff estimated roughly 80–100 ninth graders and a similar number of sixth graders would be invited into those interventions based on diagnostic results.
Allison explained the assessment approach: “All we really need is about one to three or four questions that are really getting to the math of it, and then a couple of story-problem application questions,” and those items will form the district’s short common assessments and scoring guides. The district will continue to use platform data (DreamBox, i-Ready, STAR) but plans to add teacher-created curriculum-based assessments so classroom teams can rely on multiple evidence sources before intervening.
The superintendent emphasized the urgency: the district will not wait for all state materials to be finalized before implementing changes. Board members asked about timelines and student impact; staff said some immediate gains are expected for students in the targeted interventions and that district leaders expect visible effects on cohort measures over multiple years as instruction, assessment and intervention are implemented together.
Next steps noted in the presentation include finalizing student-friendly scales for parent communication, revising pacing guides across grade levels, producing assessment item banks and rolling out professional learning for teachers starting in August with ongoing support through the next school year. The board placed the presentation in the record and the district indicated it will return with implementation metrics in future reports.
