The Ventura Unified School District board voted to approve a new name for the district facility commonly referred to as the EP Foster Annex. An advisory committee that included site leadership, a parent, a student and administrators recommended "The Cove" as the preferred name, saying it connotes a protected, welcoming coastal space that aligns with the Ocean branding used at EP Foster programs.
Committee members said they discussed alternatives (including "The Reef" and "The Pod") and weighed cultural, community and logistical considerations such as avoiding names already used elsewhere in Ventura and rejecting corporate sponsorship. Lurel Daws, who represented administration on the naming panel, said the group reached an "overwhelming consensus" on the Cove and confirmed funding is available for signage as part of the building renovation budget. The board moved to approve the recommendation by motion; the vote recorded was 4‑0.
Ending: Staff said they will post communications to families and schedule a ribbon‑cutting event early in the next school year.
