Commissioners approve $100,800 county contribution for Seveya township broadband project

Kandiyohi County commissioners voted on April 7 to support a township broadband deployment in the Seveya area by approving Resolution 2026‑20 and a county ARPA contribution of $100,800.
Mark Bashan, chair of the EDC broadband & advanced technology committee, told the board the project was viable without state border‑to‑border funding, which the state has not been able to sustain. Bashan said Vibrant (the provider) and the township will contribute to the build and that the county’s $100,800 would close a local funding gap and allow deployment to roughly 52 locations along County Road 3 and in the unincorporated town of Seveya.
‘‘This project is mainly in the area of Seveya in Whitefield Township,’’ Bashan said, noting the developer and township also committed funds and that the county’s ARPA allocation is being used to finish remaining broadband projects. Commissioners discussed the broader state and federal funding landscape and the challenge of final‑mile projects; board members praised the EDC and provider for assembling a multi‑party match to keep the build feasible.
A motion to move forward with the project was seconded and the resolution passed by voice vote; the board did not record a roll‑call tally in the meeting minutes. County staff said remaining ARPA broadband funds must be obligated and paid before the program deadline and indicated roughly $161,000 would remain in the county technology allocation after this action.
