The RSU 22 school board voted down the proposed 2026–27 school calendar after extended discussion, with a weighted tally of 366 in favor and 424 opposed.
Board member Jessica criticized a planned early-release day on Dec. 23, citing attendance data from this year: "The district was missing 1/5 of its students. 1/4 of Hampden Academy students were absent that day," she said, and argued the day should be a full day off and instruction moved to the start of the year. Jessica also raised concerns that replacing building-level professional development time with one-hour weekly staff meetings would reduce cross-school collaboration and make it harder to schedule IEP meetings for working parents.
Administrators and other board members discussed the district’s statutory responsibilities — the board must ensure 180 total days and 175 instructional days — and noted some feedback had come from the Education Association and from administrative offices. The chair confirmed the motion on the floor to approve the calendar as presented and then called the vote; because the district uses weighted voting the motion did not carry (366–424). The board asked administration to gather feedback, revise the calendar and present a new proposal at next month’s meeting.
The vote is binding for this meeting; no changes were adopted tonight and the administration will return with a revised calendar for further consideration.
