Providence city officials on May 11 told the Special Commission on Health, Opportunity, Prosperity and Education that the city will host an officially sanctioned FIFA World Cup fan zone at Station Park from June 11 through July 19, featuring a large jumbotron, a stage for local performers and cultural houses representing visiting teams.
"This is going to be a 39‑day watch party," Joe Wilson Jr., director of the Department of Art, Culture and Tourism, told the commission, describing a footprint centered on Station Park with a marketplace, food and beverage service and player activations at partner sites such as the House of Portugal.
The presentation explained the site was chosen for its access to transit and nearby parking at the mall and for its ability to activate the broader downtown — from Kennedy Plaza to Station Park — during a period that overlaps Pride, Juneteenth and July Fourth celebrations. Wilson said organizers are tailoring the schedule to local interest and to visiting fan bases, including delegations from Ghana, Scotland and Portugal.
