Miss Lowry presented the district’s end-of-year I‑Ready diagnostic results for grades 3–8 and preliminary projections for the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (GSA). She told the board the diagnostic lacks a writing component and that the county’s overall picture is similar to last year, with some schools improving and others declining. "This data was a lot more disappointing than it was midyear," she said.
Lowry noted that six schools did not meet the 100% typical growth benchmark and three schools missed the district’s stretched-growth target. She pointed to weather disruptions — about 18 snow-affected days and five remote instruction days — as a factor that reduced instruction time and said the limited testing window (24 weeks of deployment vs. a recommended 30) may affect diagnostic reliability.
Board members highlighted both concerns and successes: Stratton Middle School and Hollywood (elementary) showed meaningful gains where targeted math coaching occurred, while Coal City’s results raised concern for growing gaps. The superintendent and staff said they will continue to monitor GSA performance as official state results are released and recommended continued targeted coaching and review of deployment practices for diagnostics.
No formal policy changes were adopted at the meeting; the presentation was informational and staff committed to follow-up work and further updates.
