The Laramie County School District #2 board moved forward on a package of policy changes during its May 11 meeting, approving several policies on either first reading or on first and final reading.
The policies approved on first and final reading included IHAR (co-curricular and extracurricular programs), IHBI (time distribution records for federal programs), and JLCD (administering medication to students). The board approved several additional policies on first reading (J student attendance; JA compulsory attendance age and withdrawal procedures; JJI Student Athletics; JJIC participation in high school activities; JICJ student use of cell phones and other devices). A new policy, EEAAG (reimbursement of parent travel for students placed in specialized settings away from home), was approved on first reading only and will return for final consideration.
Board members opened policies for public comment as required; no members of the public spoke on the items during the meeting. Motions to approve the policies were made, seconded and passed by voice vote as recorded in the meeting minutes.
The board discussed details such as standing medical orders tied to medication administration policy and whether handbook items should remain separate from formal policy for the student device policy. The district will reflect the board's direction in the final policy drafts and in handbook language where applicable.
