Garden City board approves MHSAA membership, backs Wayne RESA budget and buys two buses

The Garden City Public Schools Board of Education on May 11 approved three administrative items: enrollment in the Michigan High School Athletic Association for the 2026–27 year, a resolution expressing support for the Wayne RESA preliminary budget, and the purchase of two new 65-passenger school buses.
The board voted to enroll Garden City Middle School and Garden City High School as members of the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) for the period Aug. 1, 2026, through July 31, 2027, and delegated supervision of interscholastic activities to the superintendent. The membership resolution, presented by Mr. Fischer, adopts the association’s constitution, bylaws and tournament policies as the district’s minimum standards.
The board also adopted a resolution to support the Wayne Regional Educational Service Agency (Wayne RESA) general fund operating budget for 2026–27 and directed the board secretary to submit the district’s comments and any objections to Wayne RESA before June 1, 2026, as required by Section 380.624 of the Revised School Code. During discussion Superintendent Fischer and other members urged continued countywide investment in career and technical training, saying a regional trades center would better serve students pursuing skilled trades.
Separately, the board approved the purchase of two Bluebird 65-passenger buses from Holland Bus Company for a total of $314,696.50 to be paid from the district’s sinking fund, a voter-approved funding source. Mr. Wniski said the buses will be added to the district fleet for the 2026–27 school year as part of the Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO) bus purchase program.
All three motions were adopted on voice votes; the record shows the motions passed but no roll-call tallies or named movers were recorded in the public transcript.
What’s next: The MHSAA membership would take effect Aug. 1, 2026, and the district must submit any written objections to the Wayne RESA budget by June 1, 2026. The bus purchase will proceed under the sinking fund authorization approved by voters in 2024.
