Hometown Heroes, DECA and student athletes honored at Hauppauge board meeting

At the May 12 board meeting the district recognized the Hometown Heroes Speaker Series, honored county- and state-level student achievements (music ensembles, coding team, cheer, girls winter track) and DECA participants who attended the international conference.
The Hauppauge Union Free School District Board of Education used part of its May 12 meeting to recognize community first responders and student achievements across arts, athletics and career-technical education.
Dr. Murphy invited Miss Barry to present highlights from the Hometown Heroes Speaker Series, which brought veterans and first responders into district schools to share personal experiences. Miss Barry said the series "reminded our students that leadership and service are demonstrated every day by people right here" and thanked honorees and family members who joined the event. A short video accompanying the presentation included speakers describing motivations for service and the value of teamwork.
The board also acknowledged recent student accomplishments: the wind ensemble earned a gold rating at the Nisma Majors Festival; chamber choir and chamber orchestra each won first place in their divisions at Music in the Parks; the district's Coding Eagles won the Long Island Code Conquest Hackathon for a fourth consecutive year; and several teams were named county champions, including the cheerleading and girls winter track teams. Mr. Butler called team members and coaches forward to receive certificates and congratulated individual athletes who earned county and state honors, naming students such as Noah Hutsler and Alexa Fortune among the honorees.
The director of career and technical education recognized DECA students who advanced to the international Career Development Conference, naming Annabelle Adamo and other student officers and noting nominations to the New York DECA Honor Society.
The recognitions underscored community engagement with schools and celebrated extracurricular programs that the board said contribute to student growth and leadership development.
