Placerville asks Elorado County for $35,000 to help subsidize pool operations

The Placerville City Council on May 12 voted to send a formal request to Elorado County seeking $35,000 in support for the Plasterville Aquatic Center for fiscal year 2026–27.

Parks staff presented the request and emphasized regional use of the facility: "Seven out of 10 individuals that attend and participate at the aquatic center are not City of Plasterville residents," Parks staff member Mr. Nishahara told the council, noting the city subsidizes operations that largely benefit county residents.

Members of the public urged the council to pursue the county contribution. Resident Sue Rodman said the county should contribute because county residents use the pool. Kathy Lisman advised staff on local experience with county budget allocation processes and suggested framing the request as a match to increase its chances of success.

Council discussion was blunt. Several members expressed frustration with past county decisions and skepticism about the likelihood of county funding; at the close of debate the council moved and seconded the staff recommendation to send the request and recorded a roll-call vote in favor of submitting the letter.

What it means: The city will formally ask the county for $35,000 to offset a portion of the pool’s operating subsidy. The request is intended to reflect heavy nonresident usage and to seek cost-sharing for a facility serving county constituents.

Next steps: Staff will transmit the letter to the Elorado County Board of Supervisors as directed by the council; the county board will decide whether and how to respond during its budget process.
