Tim Gabrielson, president of the Calhoun Lake Association, asked Kandiyohi County commissioners to help start the process to restore the waterbody’s historical name to “Calhoun Lake.” Gabrielson said he has a petition signed by at least 15 legal voters — the threshold required to begin the process at the county auditor’s office — and asked the board to adopt a resolution that would let the DNR complete the formal renaming steps.
Gabrielson outlined local historical research linking the name to Reverend Thomas Calhoun and described plans for a historical marker at the newly upgraded lake access. County Administrator Kelsey Baker explained the formal process: a petition filed with the county auditor, the auditor notifying the Department of Natural Resources, public notice and a county public hearing, adoption of a county resolution, and final DNR approval prior to updating maps and records.
Commissioners thanked Gabrielson for research and said staff would take the item for information and advise on next steps and legal filing requirements. Gabrielson said he had the signed petition in hand and intended to file it with the county auditor to begin the DNR process.
