Policy committee reviews new food service policy with meal-debt protections

The Wallingford Public Schools Policy Committee reviewed a new food service policy and regulation during its May 12 meeting, describing updates intended to align district practice with recent state legislative changes and federal nutrition standards.
"It aligns with legislative shifts that have occurred over the last two legislative sessions," said Miss Lour, who introduced the CABE-model food service policy. She told members the key areas of revision include unpaid meal-debt protections, updated USDA nutrition standards and expanded nondiscrimination categories. She said Mr. Baron and Christine Wallace, the interim food service director, reviewed the policy and support it.
The presenter explained the regulation sets thresholds for when families are notified about negative meal balances and that the district will implement the new thresholds beginning July 1 so buildings can start the academic year with consistent balances and procedures. She said Mrs. Turner, the district’s McKinney-Vento liaison, set the specific balances in consultation with school offices.
Committee members asked no substantive follow-up questions during the presentation. The presenter said she will move the food service policy forward to the Instructional Committee on May 18 and include it in the packet to the Board of Education the following day.
