Board honors student champions, nurses, teachers and community partners

Chesterfield County School Board used the May 12 meeting to recognize a slate of student and staff achievements. Students and coaches from Bird High, James River, and Clover Hill were honored for state championships in speech and debate; essay contest winner Olivia Steves and multiple student speakers described how the programs shaped their confidence and skills.
The board also recognized Project ADAM Hearts Safe Schools designees (the division reported 53 schools designated), retiring principals Matt Mayer, Karen Anderson and Julie Buntich for decades of service, beginning-teacher awardees including Tommy Ryan (division winner), and Jenna Ornelius as CCPS Nurse of the Year. Two community partners—Virginia Credit Union and Carter Myers Automotive—were named to the Virginia School Boards Association Business Honor Roll for partnerships around financial literacy and work-based learning. Project coordinators and honorees thanked the board and described the programs’ impact on students and staff.
