Board members said the new position is intended to give students a direct channel to the board, beginning with an orientation and retreat to clarify duties.
Board member Ryan led questions for the candidates. Betsy, a student applicant, said she would bring responsibility, time-management skills and an ability to "understand different perspectives." "I hope to accomplish an awareness on mental health," she said, adding that she has personal experience with the issue and wants to make it easier for students who feel isolated to get help.
Another applicant, identified as Annabelle, said she sees the role "as a bridge from student to board" and said she would work to be accessible and to reflect a range of student views. Annabelle said she would use experience in extracurricular activities and club participation to gather perspectives across the student body.
Board members asked applicants about the position's time commitments. The board meets twice monthly on Tuesday evenings and may require attendance at occasional committee meetings and district events; candidates said they would prioritize the role and adjust schedules as needed. The board said the selected student representative will be invited to a retreat where duties and expectations will be developed collaboratively.
The board also confirmed upcoming district events and meetings, including the district migrant-recognition awards, a seal-of-biliteracy ceremony, the May 26 regular board meeting and the June 4 high school graduation. The board said three additional applicants will be interviewed at the next work session and the appointment will be announced on June 23.
The meeting record shows no public comments were received for this session; staff member Jenny reported no submissions. The agenda adoption occurred after an unnamed board member moved and another seconded; the motion carried by a five-to-zero voice vote.
