Travis Unified recommends Paradigm for elementary and Great Minds/Eureka for middle school in math textbook first reading

Travis Unified’s Educational Services staff presented the district’s first reading on a proposed math textbook adoption on May 13, recommending Paradigm Math for elementary grades and Great Minds (Eureka) for middle school after an extensive, teacher‑led pilot and vetting process.

Nick, director of Educational Services, described a multi‑phase process that included value‑setting, county publisher review, pilot instruction at multiple sites, teacher training and consensus building. Teachers cited clarity, standards alignment, ease of planning and student engagement for Paradigm at the elementary level; middle school teachers praised Great Minds for rigor, practice opportunities and teacher supports that increased student access to high‑level math.

The recommendation is a first reading; board policy requires a public comment period and a formal adoption vote. Staff opened the materials for public inspection and said they will return on June 9 with final materials and a contract for board action, after responding to community feedback.

Next steps: public comment period through June 8, responses to questions and the formal adoption vote on June 9. If adopted, materials must be in classrooms at the start of the next school year to meet Williams Act requirements for board‑adopted instructional materials.
