Scandia Elementary principal Jen Buzzlitch and a team of students explained the school’s Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) framework at the May 13 Travis Unified board meeting, showing how tiered supports, data and simple reinforcements help students practice pro‑social behavior.
Buzzlitch described PBIS as a layered framework that organizes systems, practices and data to support students. She said staff use behavior‑specific praise and structured prompts and collect data to drive interventions. A tangible element called a “saber slip” is issued when a student meets expectations; slips can be used for class rewards or raffles and are intended as an instructional marker that prompts a conversation about desired behavior.
Student leaders described class goals tied to saber slips (for example, a bin goal that led to a movie and popcorn after 500 slips) and explained how Saber Star referrals bring a student to the office for formal recognition, often surprising and delighting families. Teachers and parents at the meeting praised the approach for combining positive reinforcement, clear expectations and data to address both universal supports and targeted interventions.
The board complimented Scandia’s staff and students for the presentation and suggested sharing successful practices across campuses. Superintendent Benson said the district supports evidence‑based frameworks that pair instruction and behavior supports.
Next steps: staff indicated they will continue to support site teams using PBIS, examine data for equity implications, and share promising practices across the district.
