The Franklin City Parks Commission voted May 11 to deny an application to hold a pickleball tournament during the city's civic celebration weekend.
Commissioner Amy Sarafin moved to deny the application, citing problems with a tournament held the previous year (wind screens and nets removed and left on site, added DPW work and traffic/parking conflicts). "Based on what happened last year with the nets and traffic, and the additional work for DPW, I move we deny the application," Sarafin said. A second was recorded and a vote followed; members voiced support and some abstentions were noted. The motion was adopted.
Several commissioners said that routine league reservations and pavilion rentals should be handled by the recreation department, which maintains reservation software and collects fees. The commission asked staff to invite recreation staff to a future meeting to clarify who will handle tournaments, insurance and fee collection and whether some revenue can be shared with DPW to cover maintenance.
No appeal or rehearing date was specified at the meeting; staff noted the commission will communicate the denial formally to the applicant and will coordinate with recreation staff on future processes.
