Superintendent: chiller replacement bid for Lincoln County High School came in under estimate; acceptance to be considered next meeting

Superintendent Barnett told the Lincoln County Board of Education on April 28 that the district’s bid opening for a chiller replacement at Lincoln County High School attracted five bidders and produced competitive results that came in ‘‘way under what we expected.’’ Barnett said one of the school’s two original chillers is at end of life, parts are obsolete and the district has been maintaining the unit by temporary repairs.
Barnett said the district secured funds through the SBA for a major improvement project and worked with an architectural firm to put the project out to bid. At the opening, Barnett said five bids arrived and the winning bids were within about $40,000 of each other, a tighter field than the district normally sees. He said the apparent low bidder will need to satisfy bonding, experience and paperwork requirements before the board considers a formal acceptance.
Barnett recommended placing acceptance of the bid on the next board agenda so the board can act formally. Board members noted relief that the project came in under bid and discussed related facility needs, including an elevator overhaul that the superintendent said he expects to pursue through the SBA.
No formal acceptance vote occurred at the April 28 meeting; the board recorded routine votes on other agenda items and will consider the chiller bid at a future meeting.
